Short Report on my Field Research on Women in the Viking Age

Hi! I’m Josefine Humble, the founder of the society!

This past May, with generous support from a research grant from the Viking Society for Northern Research, I had the incredible opportunity to undertake fieldwork across Sweden, visiting some of the most significant runestone sites in Scandinavia.

The work fed directly into my larger research project analysing “To what extent do runic inscriptions and archaeological artifacts challenge or reinforce the images of women found in Old Norse literature when assessing the role and status of women in Viking Age society?” My goal was to discover what both aspects of evidence demonstrated about women’s real role in society.

Please find below a short report on my research trip published on the Viking Society for Northern Research:

This is why the Young Scholars Society matters, so that young researchers can pursue serious questions at the cutting edge of Viking Studies scholarship.

If you're interested in Viking Age women, runestones, or field archaeology, I'd love to discuss this work further in the group discussion forum!

Kind regards,

Josefine Humble
